If you have pets, your carpet takes a beating. Between muddy paws, shedding fur, the occasional accident, and the general chaos of four-legged family members, keeping carpet clean and intact feels like a losing battle. But it doesn't have to be.
At Sano Steam Cleaning & Restoration, we clean carpet in pet households every single day. After 30+ years of tackling pet-related carpet challenges, here are our best strategies.
Prevention: The First Line of Defense
Paw Management
The ASPCA estimates that the average dog enters the home approximately 8-12 times per day. Each entry brings dirt, mud, sand, and outdoor allergens onto your carpet. To minimize this:
- Keep a towel by every exterior door: Wipe paws before pets enter. Make it a consistent routine and your pet will learn to wait.
- Place absorbent mats inside and outside doors: Microfiber mats capture moisture and fine particles from paws.
- Keep nails trimmed: Long nails snag carpet loops and pull fibers. Regular nail trimming prevents mechanical damage that no amount of cleaning can fix.
- Consider paw-washing stations: A shallow tray with a washable pad near the door catches the worst of outdoor debris.
Shedding Control
Pet hair wraps around carpet fibers and, over time, works its way deep into the pile where it traps dust and allergens. The Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) recommends:
- Vacuum high-traffic and pet areas at least 3 times per week
- Use a vacuum with strong suction and a motorized brush roll
- Empty the vacuum canister or change the bag frequently — a full vacuum loses suction quickly
- Regular pet grooming dramatically reduces the amount of hair that ends up in your carpet
Handling Pet Accidents
Act Immediately
The single most important rule with pet urine is speed. Fresh urine is much easier to address than dried urine, which has undergone a chemical change that makes it far more difficult — and smelly — to remove.
- Blot (never rub) with clean, white towels. Press firmly to absorb as much liquid as possible.
- Apply an enzyme-based cleaner designed specifically for pet urine. These break down uric acid crystals that cause lingering odor.
- Do NOT use ammonia-based cleaners — ammonia smells similar to urine and may encourage your pet to use the same spot again.
- Do NOT use steam or hot water on fresh stains — heat can permanently set protein-based stains into carpet fibers.
When DIY Isn't Enough
If urine has soaked through the carpet into the padding — which happens with large volumes or repeated accidents in the same area — surface cleaning won't solve the problem. The padding becomes a reservoir of uric acid that continues to produce odor, especially in Wilmington's humidity.
Our professional carpet cleaning includes sub-surface extraction that reaches the padding layer, removing contamination that household equipment can't touch. For severe cases, padding replacement may be necessary.
Choosing Pet-Friendly Carpet
If you're replacing carpet in a pet household, look for:
- Solution-dyed nylon or polyester: Color goes all the way through the fiber, making stains and bleaching nearly impossible
- Low, dense pile: Resists matting from pet traffic and is easier to clean
- Loop pile with caution: Some pets' claws catch on loop carpet (like Berber), pulling and snagging loops
- Stain-resistant treatments: Applied at the factory, these provide a barrier against liquid absorption
Pet Odor: The Whole-Home Approach
Pet odor doesn't just live in carpet. It settles into upholstery, curtains, air ducts, and every soft surface in your home. For comprehensive odor control:
- Schedule regular upholstery cleaning for pet-frequented furniture
- Air duct cleaning removes pet dander and hair that accumulates in your HVAC system
- Our allergy relief service addresses pet allergens throughout the home

The Professional Pet Cleaning Schedule
- One small pet, no accidents: Professional cleaning every 6 months
- Multiple pets or large dogs: Every 3-4 months
- Pets with ongoing accidents: Every 3 months plus spot treatment between visits
- Allergy sufferers in the home: Every 3 months with allergen treatment
